Crossroads Ranch Evidence-Based Equine Development Program
Where Science Meets Horsemanship
At Crossroads Ranch, we believe equine development is both an art and a science. In partnership with Honeysuckle’s Ranch Academy, we created a six-stage, evidence-based system designed to build safe, sound, and intelligent equine partners — what we call solid equine citizens. Each horse is carefully selected for its behavior, health, conformation, and performance potential, then guided through a structured process that integrates veterinary science, DNA analysis, psychology, and classical training to achieve measurable, lasting results.
The Six Stages of Development
Stage 1 – Knowledge Each horse begins with a comprehensive profile. We collect a hair sample for Etalon ProPanel + Ancestry DNA testing to identify genetic health and lineage. The horse receives a full veterinary exam, radiographs, farrier evaluation, and an initial Crossroads Ranch Equine Scoring System Report (ESSR) establishing baselines for psychology, health, conformation, and performance.
Stage 2 – Comprehension Using the ESSR, our training team — led by Crossroads Ranch and Honeysuckle’s Ranch Academy — develops a personalized plan that outlines goals, challenges, and milestones specific to each horse’s temperament and ability.
Stage 3 – Application Training begins. We act on veterinary and farrier recommendations and initiate foundational exercises to build responsiveness, confidence, and trust between horse and rider.
Stage 4 – Analysis We conduct an in-depth Hippology Study — a behavioral and environmental assessment examining the horse’s history, habits, and prior conditioning. Understanding how a horse learns and responds allows us to refine our training approach for long-term development.
Stage 5 – Synthesis At this stage, we synchronize psychology, health, conformation, and performance into an integrated, evidence-based training plan. The horse is worked and tested regularly until it meets the standards established in the ESSR.
Stage 6 – Evaluation Before graduation, each horse undergoes a final veterinary and farrier evaluation to confirm readiness. Upon successful completion, the horse earns the designation of Crossroads-Developed Horse, representing the highest standards in evidence-based equine training.
Timeline: Most horses complete the program within 3 to 12 months, depending on age, background, and progression rate.
Our Philosophy: At Crossroads Ranch — in partnership with Honeysuckle’s Ranch Academy — every horse is treated as an individual, and every stage is a step toward truth, trust, and transformation.
“I had a pleasurable experience working with Laura and her team to purchase my hunt horse mare, Sable Moon. I’ve now had a chance to work with Sable and ridden her in many hunt fields, and she’s exactly as Laura represented her to be. She has been healthy, with a steady temperament, and a willing learner. Being able to rely on what a seller tells you can be one of the biggest challenges I’ve found in my horse-related purchases. I can say Laura is as good as her word! After Sable has settled into her new life at our farm, Laura even came to pay her a visit on a trip to our area. What a treat. When I eventually need to think about another horse, Laura will be the first person I call.””
Ethical Horse Buying and Selling Requires Integrity, Transparency, Detailed Information, and Value
At Crossroads Ranch, we believe honesty isn’t optional — it’s the foundation of ethical horsemanship. We approach every sale with integrity, complete transparency, and verifiable information so that buyers can make confident, educated decisions. Many clients come to us after difficult or disappointing horse experiences — horses that weren’t represented accurately, or that had behavioral or health issues no one disclosed. We’ve been there too, and we built our entire program to prevent that from ever happening again.
Below are common buyer challenges — and exactly how we solve them.
Problem: Horses today often have little real value for the money they cost. Solved: We add measurable value through a structured program that improves each horse’s behavior, health, and performance — turning potential into proven reliability.
Problem: You need a Pre-Purchase Examination (PPE). Solved: All horses are fully vetted before they are listed for sale.
Problem: You want full health records. Solved: Buyers receive public online access to complete veterinary records for every listed horse directly through our website.
Problem: You want to ensure genetic soundness and suitability. Solved: Many of our sale horses undergo Etalon ProPanel DNA testing, screening for congenital diseases and traits related to color, temperament, speed, and endurance.
Problem: You want to know what breeds make up your horse. Solved: We use Etalon Ancestry DNA testing to identify 100% of each horse’s breed composition — giving you a clear understanding of what disciplines they’re best suited for.
Problem: You need reliable behavioral, conformation, and performance data. Solved: Every horse enters our system with a full behavioral, health, conformation, and performance assessment. We use this data to design a customized training, health, and nutrition plan. Only horses that pass all final assessments upon graduation are listed for sale. Final reports are made publicly available online.
Problem: You need more time to pay for your dream horse. Solved: We offer 60-day payment plans for horses priced over $15,000 (private sales only).
Problem: You need help with shipping or delivery. Solved: Crossroads Ranch provides delivery within 600 miles of Monroe, NC for $2.50 per mile (one way). We can also recommend trusted commercial shippers we’ve personally used.
Problem: You need temporary boarding or training. Solved: We offer both short-term board and customized training programs to help your new partner transition smoothly.
Problem: You want insurance protection for your new horse. Solved: Our horses are insured through The Baldwin Group. Contact Emily Ayres, Relationship Manager, Private Risk Management. License #18018547. O: (937) 688-1992. E: emily.ayres@baldwin.com. Mention Crossroads Ranch when you call.
