XR Queenโs Guard Arya
๐ XR Queen's Guard ๐
Today, with broken hearts, we said goodbye to XR Queen's Guard.
Arya.
She was born at Crossroads Ranch (XR) on February 12, 2026, during the Long Winter when Duke Power left us without power for thirteen days. In true Game of Thrones fashion, she arrived in the darkness, a true warrior daughter of the Queen in the North and Lord Arkyn of Riverrun.
She was bred at XR.
She was foaled at XR.
And she was laid to rest at XR.
Arya's life was brief, but she was loved before she was born.
When she was two weeks old, she lost her mother, Sansa. Like so many orphan foals, her future suddenly became uncertain. Thanks to Bronwyn Watts, ColdSprings Nurse Mares in Ocala, Florida, and Maggie, a remarkable nurse mare, Arya was given a second chance. She learned to trust again, to nurse again, and to keep moving forward.
Then came the injury.
Arya suffered a devastating injury to her leg in a freak accident. If there is one lesson I will carry forward from her story, it is this: when you identify a potential hazard on your farm, address it immediately. Don't assume there will be time later. Don't assume your horse won't find the one way to get hurt.
That lesson came at the ultimate cost, a decision I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
What followed was Arya's Long Night, a battle that lasted nearly two months. Multiple surgeries. Twenty days in the Intensive Care Unit at Tryon Equine Hospital. Endless bandage changes. Veterinary appointments. Medications. Hope. More hope. And a team of people who refused to give up on her.
Unfortunately, despite every scientific intervention by her brilliant world-class veterinary team, and the care provided by Lex, Lorelei, Stephen, Josh, Ava, Todd, Charlotte, and me, Arya's body was unable to heal the damaged bone. After x-rays, ultrasound, and consultation with her surgeon, Dr. Alec Davern, and our dear friend and Aryaโs veterinarian, Dr. Lauren Magley, we had to make the devastating decision to let her go.
Iโve learned in my 51 years that there are moments when love means fighting with everything you have, refusing to surrender even when the odds are impossible. And Iโve learned there are moments when the greatest act of love is letting go. Knowing the difference is one of the hardest lessons life will ever teach.
Arya never got the years she deserved. She never got to grow into the mare we dreamed she would become. She never got to carry a rider down a trail, become a sworn Deputy Coroner Search Horse like her mother, raise a foal of her own, or grow old in the pasture.
But Arya was loved. She knew she was loved. Every single day of her life.
She was fought for.
She was cared for.
She was never an abandoned orphan.
And she will never be forgotten.
Arya has now been returned to the earth of Crossroads Ranch, buried with her mother's ashes on the crest of the hill at Crossroads Ranch, beside the war horses who heard Valhalla Calling before her: Fortissimo, Yara, and Lyrica.
Arya, you were a warrior with a warrior's heart. You fought valiantly in every battle asked of you, wielding your sword of survival and declaring, "Not Today," until the very end. You never gave up. You never gave in. A true young Warrior Queen.
Now you are rain, my little love. Our fierce Valkyrie. ๐๐ดโ๏ธ๐ง๏ธ๐ฅ
You live in the fire.
You live in the wind.
You live in the rain.
You live in the earth of Crossroads Ranch.
And now you feast in the Great Long Hall beside your mother once more.
XR Queen's Guard, Arya, First of Her Name, Daughter of the Queen in the North, Born in the Long Winter, Orphaned but Never Alone, Warrior of the Long Night, and Forever the Princess of Crossroads Ranch.
